    On Ash Wednesday, the first day of the penitential season of Lent, we acknowledge our sinfulness and resolve to make a fresh start with God’s mercy. The dry skeletons of last year’s spiraea flowers are transformed by winter’s frost.Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions.Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sins. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.     On the last Sunday before Lent many of us will hear of Jesus’ transfiguration, when his disciples saw him in his true light and a voice from heaven proclaimed him as God’s son.Looking north from Laggan Hill, near Crieff, under heavy clouds, a bright wintry sun picks out all the details of the landscape.Jesus took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.A cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were terrified as they entered the cloud.
