On Saturday 14 December 2019 a service of celebration will take place at St Ninian’s Cathedral, Perth to mark 25 years since the first women were ordained to the priesthood in the Scottish Episcopal Church (SEC).

After many years of debate, the SEC agreed at the meeting of its General Synod in 1994 to recognise the vocation of women to the priesthood. The first ordinations took place on 17 December 1994 when 42 women were ordained in Cathedrals across the country.

The service will be held at St Ninian’s Cathedral, Perth at 2pm.  The Rt Rev Anne Dyer, Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney, will preside at the Eucharist and the Rev Canon Dr Anne Tomlinson, Principal of the Scottish Episcopal Institute, will preach the sermon.

The service is open to any who wish to attend. If you plan to attend, please RSVP by email to womenpriests@scotland.anglican.org so that the event organisers have an indication of likely numbers.

There is no onsite parking however there are several public car parks nearby.  The organisers have prepared a list of car parking facilities nearby which can be downloaded here.

The picture with cadets was taken at the rededication of the Scottish Church Collegiate School on 4 November 2019.

The school was founded in 1830 by Revd Alexander Duff, from Moulin, Pitlochry, who was the first Church of Scotland Missionary to come to India. The Head Teacher, Bivash Saniel, visited Edinburgh in June 2019 for the launch of the Asia Scotland Trust, whose aim is to develop new bilateral cultural relations between Asia and Scotland by disseminating knowledge of our shared cultural heritage and by identifying and promoting the restoration and development of specific sites and buildings which simultaneously frame the best of the past whilst opening opportunities for the future.

There were celebrations in the East Perthshire churches when Rev’d James Bryson was instituted as their rector by Bishop Ian.  St Catharine’s Church, Blairgowrie, was packed and the service was relayed to the church hall, where there was additional seating.

After the service there was a reception in Blairgowrie Town Hall, where James and his wife Liz cut a celebratory welcome cake.

Bishop Ian came to St Mary’s on Sunday 17th November 2019. His first visit to the Linkage since his institution (almost a year ago) as Bishop of The Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane.

Sunday was a linkage service, jointly with St Andrews, in order to confirm 7 members of our congregations in their Anglican faith. Indeed one of the candidates was christened at the service, prior to confirmation.

So a big thank you to Bishop Ian for coming to the linkage. It was a joy to meet him and have his views.

At St Catharine’s we celebrated All Saints Sunday with a Cafe Church. During the service we sang new hymns to well-known tunes accompanied by keyboard and guitars, matched descriptions to saints’ names, made haloes to remind us that we are all called to be saints, and ended our time of fellowship with bacon rolls. We all enjoyed the opportunity to try worshipping in a different style.
