Just to let you know, the following concert will be on Sunday 17th March – this is a leap year – and will contain a number of firsts: it will be given by Taiwanese Canadian, Judy Hung, baroque violin, violoncello da spalla & organ, accompanied by Nicolas Arzimanoglou-Mas, theorboe. (Nicolas was born in Paris to a Spanish mother and Greek father). Judy is travelling all the way from Canada to play for us, and I am delighted to say that her travel is paid for by the Canadian Council for the Arts! (We could not afford it!) We have had a theorboe played at one of our concerts before, some time ago. It is nonetheless an impressive instrument. We have not seen a violoncello da spalla before, indeed I hadn’t heard of this instrument until Judy contacted me. I also asked Judy for some Canadian ice hockey music on the organ; I don’t think she was too impressed. So, please make a note in your diaries to come along and see and hear these unusual instruments making music.
