There has been an Episcopal presence in Kirkcaldy for over 200 years with at one time, three churches in the town; St Michaels, St Columba’s and St Peter’s.
St Peter’s was established in 1811 and occupied a site in Townsend Place with a large Victorian building, a hall and Rectory behind. The site of the Rectory is now occupied by Gowrie House Care Home. In the early 1970’s it was found that the church building was subsiding due to mine works beneath; particularly at the tower. Following extensive investigations, the Vestry and Diocese were faced with two options; underpin the tower and foundations or demolish the building and erect a new building further back on the site, incorporating an existing house, stables and hayloft into the design.
After much deliberation it was agreed to demolish and rebuild with the diocese and other charges helping to fund the rebuilding. In September 1976, the present building was re-consecrated under the auspices of the Right Revd Michael Hare-Duke and has remained in its present form since then. The 50th Anniversary will be commemorated on the weekend of 5/6th September 2026 with a number of special events.
The 50th Anniversary Memorial Window design has been agreed with the Diocesan Buildings Committee and will be dedicated at the service on 6th September.
On the afternoon of Saturday 5th September St Peter’s will host a Garden Party/Afternoon tea for the congregation, families and friends where it is hoped to provide some entertainment. The Vestry intend to invite representatives from the civic and local community as well as those organisations who use the building.
On Sunday 6th September, services will be held as usual at 9.15am and 10.30am, but will be lower key. The festival celebration service will take place at 3pm at which The Right Revd Ian Paton, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane will preside, preach and dedicate the new window, followed by a simple wine reception. Other SEC congregations from the Area Council Churches, together with Diocesan officials and our Ecumenical neighbours will also be invited to attend.
