As we commemorate the conception of Mary, mother of the Lord, we give thanks for the part she played in God’s plan to redeem the world, and pray that we may follow her example. As this low cloud clears, it gradually reveals more of the landscape below Kinnoull Hill. Almighty God,who looked with favour on your servant Maryand called her to be the mother of your Son:grant us, we pray, the humility which found favour in your sight;that we, with her, may proclaim the greatness of your name, and find the mercy shown to those who stand in awe of you;through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.Amen. ... On the second Sunday in Advent we hear Baruch’s prophecy of God’s people being gathered together and returning home on freshly-levelled paths. The Gospel reading reminds us of a similar prophecy by Isaiah. The construction and opening of this new bridge and road, north of Perth, provides a new and easier route for many travellers who need to cross the river Tay.Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height; look toward the east, and see your children gathered from west and east at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that God has remembered them. For they went out from you on foot, led away by their enemies, but God will bring them back to you, carried in glory, as on a royal throne. For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low and the valleys filled up, to make level ground, so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God. (Baruch 5:5-7)John the Baptist went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" (Luke 3:3-6)Stir up our hearts, Lord,to prepare the way of your only-begotten Son:that, in his coming,we might serve you with our hearts made pure;through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.Amen. ...
