The Year of Pilgrimage – 2021

Robes and Vestments

Leading the Prayers of Intercession

People gathered from congregations across the diocese to hear about work that is taking place, to learn from each other, to celebrate the first anniversary of Bishop Ian’s consecration, and to meet old and new friends. There was time for networking, an opportunity to see displays from each congregation and other optional activities before the start of the more structured activities.

There were five points around the Cathedral which were information sharing spaces where someone gave a short talk on what is happening in the Diocese.  They were:-

  1. Inspiring Worship – Bishop Ian
  2. Online resources – Lis Burke
  3. Lay Ministries – Elaine Garman
  4. Community Involvement/Foodbank -Anthony Birch
  5. Young People’s experiences of church – a church for all – Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline Churches

After a break for tea, at which Bishop Ian cut his celebratory cake, all reconvened in the Cathedral to hear a short conversation session led by +Ian when he interviewed Kerry Dixon (Church Army) and Chic Lidstone ( Workplace Chaplaincy in Scotland).

The evening concluded with Evensong at which we were accompanied by the cathedral choir.

Below is a selection of comments made on the feedback forms handed in.

What was useful, helpful, enjoyable

  • The five stations
  • The stations of information were good and useful

  • Enjoyed reading about what is going on in different churches around the Diocese. There is some very interesting work going on that we are probably not as aware of as we might be so this is a great opportunity – I think this could be developed further – more churches could be encouraged to do a display
  • Valuable to see what other churches were doing/trying/developing
  • Very much enjoyed and found useful and helpful the conversations with the Church Army and Workplace Chaplaincy. Extremely inspiring.
  • The talks were very useful and inspiring
  • Liturgy especially useful as well as enjoyable
  • Details of computer-based resources
  • Lots of helpful advice on where to get info from the Diocese and websites
  • What the youngsters feel
  • Stirling’s voluntary service
  • Enjoyed/found useful all the talks but especially the ones on youth work and worshippers
  • The organisation was extremely good
  • Lots to go home and mull over
  • The whole experience truly enjoyable.

Any further comments?

  • Further events in other Diocese locations
  • Can we have some more please!
  • A great event. I was much more inspired than I had expected to be!
  • A delightful helpful and lovely afternoon

The Gathering 2019

This year’s Gathering takes on a new format with people from around the Diocese invited to gather for the afternoon of Sunday 20th October at St Ninian’s Cathedral, Perth, and finish with an Evensong to celebrate Bishop Ian’s first year in the Diocese.

Arrivals are from 1.30pm – bring a packed lunch if you wish – tea and coffee will be provided. Between 1.30 and 2.30 we have the opportunity to eat our lunches, take a guided tour of the newly refurbished Cathedral, browse and buy books from Cornerstone Bookshop Edinburgh (please bring cash if you would like to make purchases) or walk the indoor labyrinth.

We will be welcomed at 2.30 by Bishop Ian and then get short tasters of a variety of  projects and experiences that are being offered in our churches around the Diocese.

The topics include young and old together, finding new resources, inspiring worship, community engagement, and lay ministries. To ensure that everyone gets an opportunity to hear about each topic, booking is not required for this year’s Gathering and we will rotate through the topics in turn.

We will also learn new music for Evensong and hear Bishop Ian and a guest in conversation on a topical subject. And we will make room for tea and scones!

Street parking and Council car parks are free in Perth on Sundays. So come along and say hello to people you haven’t seen for a while, make some new friends, and get some new ideas, as you hear about the exciting things that are taking place in our Diocese. We expect to depart by 5.30pm. Further information from our Diocesan website https://standrews.anglican.org/ and Laurene MacKenzie at gathering@warpmail.net
